Informed consent

The purpose of an informed consent is to insure that you understand the purpose of the study and the nature of your involvement. The informed consent must provide sufficient information such that you have the opportunity to determine whether you wish to participate in the study.

Present study: Reasoning strategies and linguistic constructions

Research personnel: The following people are involved in this research project, and may be contacted at any time if you have questions or concerns: Dr. Gianluca Giorgolo (email:, phone: 613 520 2600, ext. 1492), Dr. Ash Asudeh (email:, phone: 613 520 2600, ext. 1492)

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the reasoning strategies used by people when dealing with different linguistic constructions.

Task requirements: We ask you to watch some short videos of people describing a situation. After each clip you will be asked to answer some simple questions concerning the description. The completion of the questionnaire should take no more than 15 minutes.

Potential risk/discomfort: There are no physical risks to participating in this study nor you will feel any discomfort. The materials used in this study deal with neutral topics and make no use of emotional or upsetting language.

Anonymity/Confidentiality: The data collected in this experiment is strictly confidential. All data is coded such that your identity is not associated with the responses you provide. No information about your identity (e.g. IP address) is available to the researchers nor to anyone else.

Right to withdraw: Your participation in this study is entirely voluntary. At any point during the study you have the right to withdraw from the study without penalty by simply not completing the online questionnaire (e.g. by closing the browser window). If you decide to withdraw your responses will be destroyed. After completing the questionnaire you will not able to withdraw your responses anymore as the researchers have no way of linking your responses to your identity.

Storage of data: The responses you provide in the questionnaire will be stored by the researchers in electronic encrypted format. Only the researchers will have access to the data and your identity will not be linked in any way to the data.
